How Does a Service Dog Help Manage Diabetes?

Trained from birth to identify the scent of low blood sugar, service dogs trained for the purpose of helping diabetics can alert individuals of a dip in blood sugar up to 20 minutes before a glucometer.

Physical Benefits of Early Alerts

Early alerting by a service dog allows an individual with diabetes to take necessary precautions (such as eating a carbohydrate-rich snack) much sooner than otherwise possible. In turn, early alerting reduces the amount of stress brought onto the pancreas of the diabetic individual.
