A Conversation on Wellness with Chief Rhett Bolen

We recently sat down with Monroe Police Chief Rhett Bolen to talk about the growing importance of wellness in law enforcement. During our conversation, Chief Bolen shared how conversations around mental health have not always been easy in policing, but that creating safe spaces for officers to decompress is becoming a priority. He spoke about how animals naturally help lower barriers, allowing officers to feel more comfortable processing difficult experiences. Hearing department leadership openly champion wellness reinforces just how meaningful Ivy’s future role will be for officers and staff.

Our Healing Behind the Badge: Ivy’s Call to Serve campaign is dedicated to training and placing Ivy as the Monroe Police Department’s facility therapy dog to support officer wellness and provide comfort to the community. Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, we have raised $14,488 toward our $15,000 goal. With less than a week left until the campaign ends on February 28, there’s still time to keep the momentum going and help Ivy step into her important role.

Ivy is from Puddles’ December 2023 litter, and from the very beginning she showed the calm, people-focused temperament that makes a wonderful therapy dog. Friendly, gentle, and naturally social, Ivy has a way of helping people feel comfortable the moment they meet her.

During her time with puppy raiser Rosemary and her family, Ivy gained experience in a variety of everyday settings that helped shape her confidence and steady nature. From busy public outings and neighborhood walks to holiday gatherings and church services, she approached each new environment with curiosity and ease. Snow days quickly became a favorite, as she happily chased snowballs and played with pure joy.

As Rosemary shared, “We probably spoiled her more than we were supposed to, and it was very easy for us to become overly attached to her.” Anyone who has spent time with Ivy understands why she leaves such a lasting impression.

When Ivy puts on her vest, her focus shifts and her purpose becomes clear. She is now preparing to serve officers, staff, and community members by offering calm presence and connection during difficult moments. Dogs like Ivy provide more than comfort. They help create space for people to breathe, reset, and begin to heal.

Rowan, Lobo, and Lolly Take the Next Step in Service

We are thrilled to share that Rowan, Lobo, and Lolly successfully completed their service evaluations with K9s For Warriors. Each pup showed off their skills, confidently navigated public spaces, and interacted with new people, proving they are ready for the important work ahead.

These three amazing dogs have now left our care to continue their journey toward serving veterans. They were raised and trained through our Started 4 Service program, which gives future service dogs a strong foundation in advanced obedience and helps get them to those who need them most faster.

This life-changing program is made possible thanks to our incredible sponsor, USAA, and the ongoing support of our donors. Their generosity helps these pups reach their full potential and make a real difference in someone’s life.
