Chaperone Program Application

The Chaperone Program at Project 2 Heal offers a unique opportunity for dedicated individuals to provide a permanent, loving home for our breeding dogs. As a chaperone, you will be responsible for the dog's care throughout its life, with ownership transferred to you once the dog retires from its breeding duties.

Chaperones play a vital role in Project 2 Heal’s mission, which is to breed, raise, and train Labrador Retrievers for service work. Many of our puppies are donated to service dog organizations across the country, while others remain at P2H to undergo formal service dog training and are then donated to local residents in the Carolinas. Our dogs are placed with veterans, adults with disabilities, and children with special needs.

Chaperones are responsible for the care, training and overall well-being of our breeding dogs. Chaperones should be prepared to cover the financial requirements of owning a dog, including but not limited to; food, supplements, monthly preventative care (flea/tick/heartworm), veterinary care, training, and transportation to/from P2H headquarters for breeding purposes.

On average, puppies are placed with Chaperones between 8 weeks and 6 months of age. On occasion, older dogs (1-3 years old) may come available for breeding purposes and need a Chaperone. Once a dog has passed all their health testing, which is done around 2 years of age (costs associated with these health tests are the responsibility of P2H), the female dog will be an active breeder for P2H until about five years of age. On average, a female dog will come into heat at around a year of age and will have two heat cycles per year, typically about 6-8 months apart. Male dogs can be used to breed until about 8-10 years of age. Chaperones are responsible for alerting P2H staff when female dogs come into heat so that breeding can be planned in a timely manner. Chaperones should be available to transport the dog to/from P2H headquarters for breeding purposes. Chaperones are foster care providers for our breeding dogs until the age of retirement (females: 5 years old, males 8 years old) and then become the dogs’ legal owners after their retirement.

Project 2 Heal Labradors come from world-class breeding lines with exceptional health and temperaments. All our breeding dogs undergo extensive genetic testing to ensure that only the best genetics are passed on through the generations. Our dogs are valued between $5-30k depending on their age and level of training.
