How one child’s story sparked a movement of healing, hope, and community support
Two years ago to the day, on a quiet Sunday night, Joy’s parents, Matt and Jodi, sat together in their living room reading a set of genetic test results. What they found would forever reshape the path ahead for their family.
The diagnosis was Rett syndrome—a rare and complex neurological disorder that affects nearly every aspect of a child’s development.
Up until her first birthday, Joy’s life looked much like any other child’s. She smiled, laughed, played, and hit her developmental milestones. But shortly after turning one, something changed. Her progress began to slow. Her speech faded. Her coordination declined. After months of uncertainty and unanswered questions, a neurologist noticed something others hadn’t: repetitive hand movements. It was a small detail—but one that finally unlocked the truth.
Rett syndrome is caused by a mutation in the MECP2 gene. It creates a severe disconnect between the brain and the body—meaning that while Joy’s mind is full of thoughts, feelings, and personality, her body can’t always respond the way she wants it to.
She’s nonverbal. She has limited use of her hands. Her mobility and balance are affected. Everyday activities like eating, playing, or getting dressed require continuous support.
Joy is exactly that—pure joy. She’s silly, affectionate, curious, and full of life. She loves music, snacks, bouncing on trampolines, and being near water. And more than anything, she has a deep, intuitive bond with animals. Her connection to the world around her is powerful, even if she can’t always express it in typical ways.
This week marks two years since Joy’s diagnosis with Rett syndrome—a moment that reshaped her family’s world. In that time, they've learned, adapted, and advocated fiercely for her future.
Through our Paws for a Child campaign, we set out to raise $30,000 to fund a service dog who can provide Joy with greater independence, safety, and connection. That goal was met within the first 72 hours—but the need doesn’t stop here.
There are so many children, veterans, and adults with special needs still waiting for healing. Joy’s story is just the beginning.
While Joy’s story is at the heart of this mission, she represents so many others still waiting for hope and healing. Every additional gift makes it possible to serve more children, veterans, and adults with special needs—because no one should have to walk their path alone.
To everyone who donated, shared, or simply followed along—thank you. You’ve helped make something truly life-changing possible.
